Frequently Prescribed Medications and Effects on Singing and Health

Unfortunately, many commonly prescribed drugs that treat allergies or infections can cause vocal problems, some severe, but "temporary", like laryngitis.  For a singer, the idea of laryngitis being temporary is NO CONSOLATION.   Regardless, some medicines will cause vulnerable dry vocal folds to become even more brittle and dry, and therefore more prone to laryngitis, and extremely serious injuries such as nodules.  Excessive coughing, which can be aggravated by certain medications, can lead to hoarseness and tissue damage, also..  Check out this website  to learn how, according to the research at the National Center for Voice and Speech, unfortunately,  many groups of drugs have documented negative effects on the vocal system  while, thankfully, some other commonly prescribed drugs, are helpful.  Unfortunately, many directors or conductors don't understand much about the origins, treatment,  or recovery potential for vocal illnesses, so the best plan is preventative, but if it happens, keep your health issues private.  You don't want your health the subject of insensitive gossip or ignorant speculation.  Your health is a private matter, and your priority as a singer.

 Chiropractic for Vocal Heath

The body needs to be in proper alignment for the voice to flow  freely.  To sing your best, tension and constriction, particularly in the upper body must be eliminated.  Chiropractic has been very helpful to me.  Here is a definition.  For more information visit Dr. John Cece's website. According to The Association of Chiropractic Colleges, "chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health."

Yoga breathwork, posture and balance fortify the singer's perfomance.  There are an number infinite benefits to the singer from practicing yoga. Concentrating on the moment while flowoing through the poses tranlates to freedom of the mind and body, which is the ultimate state of being for the vocal performer.  Juluka Yoga Studios in Westwood, New Jersey off some of the best yoga classes for all levels.
